Zwijgen

Silence: Coping with war memories in Southwest Uganda

Whereas in current Western views people should speak in order to prevent severe psychological problems caused by traumatic war experiences, people in Mbarara district, in Southwest Uganda, consider talking as dangerous and as something that might effect their health. This article deals with the question why people do not talk about their war experiences and why there is such a 'conspiracy of silence'. It appears that the destruction of the community and cultural institutions deprive people of having a public space where they can share their personal memories with each other. Furthermore, political, economic and psychological aspects also contribute to a situation in which remaining silent is the best thing to do. The article is followed by six comments from various disciplines to which the author responds in a final reaction.

Over zwijgen gesproken: Een reactie

When mad people tell stories, time runs away.
Time, remembering and forgetting in a closed community and outside

Generally, one assumes that stories are constructions of events in the personal and social history. Memories, compulsive repetition and the like are attempts to master the past. They are a repetition of past actions. This assumption is cultural and is especially clear in psychotherapy and reminiscence therapy. Stories about the past have to be told to give a new meaning so that the rhythm of someone's life is restored. Stories about the past are also attempts to control the future. In this case, they are not meant for recovering, but for the maintenance of someone's time.
The purpose of this article is to describe (with the help of ethnographic data) how time is a mixture of past, present and future and how stories become flesh and blood after they are told. Stories have a force which drive people to action. The story is a blueprint for the future. Mad stories illustrate themagic and power of words, that people use to control and to shape the future and their life rhythms. They show the vitality and resistance against hopelessness of seriously ill people. They show that time may be valorised differently. The author argues that this process is not specific formad people, but that many persons use their stories in this way. Time has different meanings and people use its different forms in a jumble with different reasons and depending on their situation.

DIANA GIBSON
Chronic illness and wives as care givers
Narratives from the Western Cape, South Africa

Narratives are currently much sought after in South Africa as part of the evidence of trauma and suffering presented to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, for therapeutic purposes, the production of a ‘new’ history and to involve the ‘community’ in the process of transformation. In the process certain kinds of stories are privileged while others find little legitimation. This paper argues that the largely unheard stories of people who had amputations as a result of diabetes, as well as those of women who give care at home, yet do not receive assistance from formalised home care services, are equally important to understand cumulative trauma in South Africa. Such stories show that individual suffering is often loosely linked to and indicative of a wider ‘social sickness’.

Child abandonment
Five dramatic cases of mothers in Addis Ababa

In Ethiopia, many children are abandoned every year, directly or indirectly, in harsh or relatively safe environments. The problem appears to be more serious in Addis Ababa than in any other urban area of Ethiopia. In this paper, I present five dramatic cases of child abandonment which led to the death of the child, and examine the possible factors that account for this practice. The article is based on interviews with mothers, police officers, and court officials and on the study of hospital records. The problem of child abandonment in Addis Ababa is mainly linked to general conditions of poverty, incompatibilities in marital life and problems of migration.
