"I don't know why love is doing this to us": moeder worden in Dominica
Aan de hand van verhalen van twee vrouwen die in Dominica hun eerste kind kregen worden enkele ideeën en gewoonten rond zwangerschap en bevalling beschreven. In hun verhalen vertellen de vrouwen bovendien iets over hun persoonlijke gevoelens en de problemen die zij als toekomstig moeder ondervonden. Het verslag laat tevens zien hoezeer depositie van de onderzoeker in de gemeenschap de loop en de uitkomsten van het onderzoek bepaalt.

"I don 't know why love is doing this to us": becoming mother in Dominica
The life-stories of two women who had their first baby in Dominica form the basis of a description of local concepts and practices concerning pregnancy and childbirth. The first story is by a Dominican woman, the second by the author. The two women reveal their personal feelings and the problems they encountered during their pregnancy and the time of delivery. The article also shows how the fieldworker's position in the community influenced the course and outcome of her research.

Besnijdenis bij Somalische vrouwen: de stilte doorbroken?
Vrouwenbesnijdenis is het laatste jaar door de komst van vele Somalische vluchtelingen een aandachtsveld binnen Nederland geworden. In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op de problematiek van infibulatie, de meest ingrijpende vorm van besnijdenis. De sociaal-culturele context van dit gebruik wordt besproken in relatie tot depositie van vrouwelijke Somalische vluchtelingen. Gepleit wordt voor nader onderzoek naar alle aspecten van het hulpzoekgedrag van Somalische vrouwen in Nederland en het formuleren van een beleid dat zich niet eenzijdig richt op een verbod op infibulatie, maar op de problematische positie van vrouwelijke asielzoekers en vluchtelingen in het algemeen.

Circumcision of Somali women: the silence broken?
Female circumcision has become a focus of attention in the Netherlands after the arrival of a large number of Somali refugees. The authors discuss the problems around infibulation, the most drastic form of female circumcision. They describe the socio-cultural context of this tradition and relate it to the present position of female Somali refugees. They call for more research into the various aspects of help seeking by Somali women in the Netherlands and recommend that health policy should not be limited to banning infibulation but should address the total situation of these women as refugees and seekers of asylum.

De risico's en gevolgen van AIDS voor vrouwen in ontwikkelingslanden
Vrouwen in ontwikkelingslanden worden zwaar getroffen door de verspreiding van het humaan immunodeficiëntie virus (HIV) dat AIDS veroorzaakt. De factoren die in het geding zijn liggen op drie terreinen: risico's om met HIV geïnfecteerd te worden; psychische en sociale lasten ten gevolge van de epidemie; en problemen bij zelfbescherming tegen infectie.

The risks and consequences of AIDS for women in developing countries
In developing countries, women are deeply affected by the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Their gender places them at great risk for infection with HIV and poses dilemmas with regard to the psychological and social burdens caused by the AIDS pandemic. Women's problems in protecting themselves against infection with the virus are also discussed.

Vrouwen en primary health care in Zambia
Aan de hand van een voorbeeld uit de Western Province van Zambia wordt getoond wat community participation voor vrouwen betekent. Hoewel men in de programmavoorstellen veel aandacht besteedt aan de deelname van vrouwen in primary health care, blijkt in de praktijk dat vrouwen nagenoeg afzijdig blijven in de planning en uitvoering ervan.

The example of a Primary Health Care project in the Western Province of Zambia illustrates the empty meaning of 'community participation' for rural women. The project proposal emphasizes the importance of women's participation in Primary Health Care but in reality women are practically excluded from its planning and implementation.

Vrouwen en voedingsvoorlichting: een casestudy uit Burkina Faso
Voedingsvoorlichting is een veel geprezen en frequent toegepaste methode in de strijd tegen kwalitatieve ondervoeding bij jonge kinderen. Deze voorlichting is doorgaans gebaseerd op wat goed is voor het kind vanuit medisch of voedingskundig oogpunt, maar maakt aanspraak op het tijd/geld-budget van degene die de adviezen in praktijk moet brengen. De voorlichting wordt vrijwel altijd gegeven aan de vrouwelijke verzorger, meestal de moeder. Willen voedings- en andere voorlichtingsprogramma's succes hebben, dan zullen ze gebaseerd moeten zijn op de sociale, economische en culturele ruimte die vrouwen tot hun beschikking hebben. Dit kan gebeuren door een beter inzicht te verkrijgen in hun situatie en door daadwerkelijke participatie van de bevolking in de gezondheidszorg. Een beter inzicht in het dagelijks leven is slechts een stap op de goede weg. Uit onderstaand artikel blijkt echter de complexiteit en de veelheid aan factoren die het toepassen van (voedings-)voorlichting beïnvloedt.

Women and nutritional education: a case study from Burkina Faso
The authors report on their research among mothers and health workers in centres for recuperation and nutritional education in the Province of Yatenga, Burkina Faso. They argue that nutritional education should take into account the social, economic, and cultural 'space' that women have at their disposal. Health workers involved in education activities should acquire more insight into women's lives and the population should participate more actively in health care. At the same time, the study shows the complexity and variety of problems affecting nutritional education.

"Ze kent onze problemen niet": zwangerschap en bevalling in Cusco, Peru
In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op de zorg rond zwangerschap en bevalling in Peru. De opvattingen van vrouwen hierover worden vergeleken met die van gezondheidswerkers. Beide groepen vinden de verleende zorg niet optimaal. De gezondheidswerkers, geschoold in de westerse geneeskunde, zijn van mening dat de vrouwen onvoldoende op de hoogte zijn van de fysiologie van hun lichaam, en daarom slecht meewerken tijdens de bevalling. Volgens de vrouwen, die vanuit het warmtelkoude-principe redeneren, biedt de verleende zorg niet de vereiste voorwaarden voor een goed verloop van de bevalling. Beide partijen verwoorden hun onvrede over de gang van zaken in de terminologie van het medische systeem dat hun bekend is. Wederzijdse vooroordelen worden op die manier versterkt en de werkelijke oorzaken van de bestaande onvrede en slechte communicatie blijven onderbelicht.

"She does not know our problems": pregnancy and delivery in Cusco, Peru
The author has done field research in Cusco, Peru. She compares the ideas of local women about pregnancy and childbirth with those of professional health workers. Both groups criticize the quality of care. The health workers, who have been trained in the biomedical tradition, remark that the women do not know enough about the physiology of their body and - for that reason - fail to cooperate during the delivery. The women, arguing from the hot/cold perspective, emphasize that the health workers do not provide the right type of care to ensure a safe delivery. Both parties verbalize their complaints in the terminology of their own medical beliefs. Mutual prejudices are thus reinforced and the real causes of the existing problems and the lack of communication remain hidden.
